Nine to Go: American Idol - Latest Betting Odds

Wow, its a slow news day today. Even the Washington Post had to scramble for a story - complaining about the fashions disaster that is American Idol

With Lisa gone, Paris remains the only young'un left in this year's competition.

Rocker Chris, who still hasn't found another trick in his limited playbook is still screeching his way towards alt-rock tedium and remains the strong 11/10 favourite.

The surprise this week - to some people - was seeing the usually stalwart Katherine Mcphee in the bottom 2. She clung onto her place and is still seen as a second favourite at 3/1 - but it will be interesting if she can pick up next week.

Her fellow competitor, pretty boy Ace Young, who looked like a main contender earlier on in the series also found himself in a similar position a couple of weeks ago and still hasn't climbed back into fortune - a bottom 3 again this week and his odds are sliding downhill steadily - he's now 22/1

Grey-haired throwback, Taylor Hicks is the interesting proposition this year. He's got a lot of fans out there and is going through the competition as safely as Chris. He's currently 4/1 and probably picked up more viewers' support this week as he thankfully held back on his usual edgy performance

American Idol - Outright Winner
All odds taken from Paddy Power

Chris Daughtrey 11 - 10
Katharine McPhee 3 - 1
Taylor Hicks 4 - 1
Mandisa Hundley 10 - 1

Elliott Yamin 12 - 1
Ace Young 22 - 1
Bucky Covington 100 - 1

BAFTA TV Awards 2006 - Latest Betting Odds

Paddy Power have opened a book on this year's TV Bafta's - and for some categories, they seem to think its a sure thing.

Eastenders looks set to dominate 'best continuing drama' and is currently 1/2 favourite. Corrie is next at 13/8, whilst the 2 BBC hospital dramas, Holby City and Casualty are long shots.

The Alan Sugar version of The Apprentice is favourite to take 'best features programme' at 4/6. Dragon's Den follows at 3/1 along with Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, whilst enduring car show, Top Gear is 10/1

For 'best comedy performance' Catherine Tate in her eponymously titled show is currently odds on 1/2 favourite with Ashley Jensen from Extras, next at 10/3. Chris Langham and Peter Capaldi from 'The Thick of It' make up the final 2 spots and are 6/1 and 7/1 respectively

The X-Factor is nominated for the Lew Grade Award for Entertainment Series and is 1/2 to take that mantle. Strictly Come Dancing is available at 9/4

Now its Kung Fu Idol

A chinese TV company are about to launch K-Star - the martial arts equivalent of pop idol.

The competition, open to mainland China and 5 other countries, will be searching for the next Jet Li, Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan. The winner will get to star in their own kung fu movie.

Shaolin monks opened the event and said they are looking for someone with good kung fu skills and high morals. I wonder if Mr Cowell would ever be on the judges panel? Regardless, I think it would be a hit if it was shown here

Desperately Seeking Seacrest

There are somethings in life that are best remained unseen.

And this could well be one of them.

American tabloid, US Weekly have published a series of photos with Desperate Housewife, Teri Hatcher making out with that manly host of American Idol, Ryan Seacrest.

Surely Hollywood wouldn't stoop so low to have staged these photos?

Or maybe its just a ruse to take our minds off the appallingly bad edition of American Idol this week - when all 10 deserve to be booted off for bad singing, bad song choice and being just plain bad. Its likely the young Lisa Tucker may get given the red card this week but the often reliable dialidol are surprisingly predicting one of the favourites, Kathrine McPhee to be low on the list. Amazingly, Simon loved Kathrine last night as she sang a Christina Aguilera song - but to most people's ears she was horrifically off-key for most of the song

I would give a rundown of the performances, but I neither knew most of the '21st century songs' nor would ever want to hear them again.

However, if you are betting on the Idol this year, both Ace Young and Katherine seem to be losing people's attention pretty quickly.

Is Simon Cowell Taking Over American TV?

First is the massive success of American Idol. And its growing - with over 30 million viewers a week tuning in, in the US alone.

Then Cowell brought over a US version of the BBC show Dragon's Den. Giving it the original title of 'American Inventor', this began a couple of weeks ago on the Fox network and is being promoted as the geeks (sorry, inventor's) version of Pop/American Idol. Its already getting about 15 million viewers.

Now, Hollywood's favourite grump has announced a new show. With all good ideas seemingly strewn in a rubbish tip somewhere, he pulled a yellow post-it note from the bottom of the pile and came up with a brand new TV concept - the talent show. Called it 'America's Got Talent' and giving a $1 million prize the show will cross a mix of stupid human tricks, stupid pet tricks and no doubt an appalling variety of vaudeville acts.

With his penchant of ensuring the word 'American' be attached to any show, there's a number of potential other reality shows to be had. America's Top Artist. America's most Flexible Postman. American Yodeller.

But there's one thing missing with the current US TV domination. No X-Factor. Yet.

Ethel Skinner and Trevor Jordache Tops Best Soap Deaths

Radio Times readers have voted for the most memorable British soap deaths - and named Trevor Jordache's stabbing and concrete burial as the most dramatic. Coronation Street cad, Richard Hillman can second when he drove his car into a canal.

Eastenders seemed to hold the Ace card for emotional death scenes. Ethel Skinner had the most tearjerking death when Eastenders pulled the euthanisa card. Other emotional deaths included the Christmas day death of Jamie Mitchel.

The most ridiculous deaths unsurprisingly includes Janine Butcher pushing Barry off a cliff.

The British Soap Awards will be televised in April. You can vote for your favourite villians, sexiest stars or favourite soaps. Paddy Power have also opened the betting

TomKat Birth is Imminent - Cruise Orders Silence

Continuing the neverending spiral of insanity coming from the Tom Cruise camp, it appears that placards are going up outside the humble Beverley Hills abode ordering any visitors, paparrazi or gatecrashers to remain silent and make any physical movements slow.

Following the scientology birthing doctrine, created by a male sci-fi writer L Ron Hubbard, Katie will have to remain as quiet as possible during the birth and anyone nearby has to remain in complete silence - any noise could ultimately negatively affect the kid and will become a traumatic experience. And no painkillers are allowed unless absolutely necessary.

However, there's still some time to bet on the naming of the Tomkitten. Paddy Power's have gone with the obvious names for Junior, but if fellow scientologists are anything to go by, the more obscure name the better. Jason Lee named his kid Pilot Inspektor, whilst John Travolta's kids are the slightly more bearable Jett and Ella Bleu. Hubbard and L Ron still haven't made the list - but Shakespeare and Hollywood have

Embrace to Record England World Cup Song

Brit band Embrace have won the chance to record the England team's world cup song. The song will be called 'World at your Feet' but is currently being kept under wraps - although The Sun is reporting they knew about the deal last Friday and a Yorkshire-based betting rush began

As posted here last week, Embrace were originally long shots to get the gig, but a recent betting spree saw them come in from a 40/1, then to 16/1 and finally bookies caught wind of the scam and slashed the odds completely - ultimately closing the book

Chris Daughtry Feels the Heat on American Idol

American Idol Chris Daughtry has come in for multitudes of praise by the judges for his revamping of classics such as 'Higher Ground' and 'I Walk the Line'. However, the discussion boards are buzzing that Daughtry isn't quite as original as he may seem.

Daughtry is currently 15/8 favourite to take the American Idol crown. His rasping rock voice has certainly struck a chord in the competition as has his adamant stance to remain close to his rock roots. However, online fans have found something very familiar by his renditions. Whilst he admitted that his version of Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground' was based on the Red Hot Chilli Peppers revamp, he kept quiet about 'I walk the Line'. Some astute fans have mentioned the similarities between his version and that from the band 'Live' a couple of years ago.

However, whatever the accusations, his popularity doesn't seem to be declining. With Chicken Little singer, Kevin Covais, saying farewell this week, the odds haven't changed too much. Daughtry remains big favourite, whilst Kathryn McPhee can be had at 16/5 with Bet365. Mandisa could be a dark horse - with her consistently powerful performances and is currently available at a tempting 8/1. Interestingly, Simon Cowell favourite, Kellie Pickler, is a long shot at 12/1 whilst Paris Bennett, who finally showed the viewers what she's capable of this week, is also available at 12/1. Another dark horse could be Elliott Yamin. He has the kind of backstory that the American public loves, is seen as the best male singer in the competition and has been drawing a lot of publicity in the tabloids right now. Paddy Power has Elliott at 11/1

Javine and Jade Take The Games

Bookie favourites from the start, Javine won 7 out of the 10 events, whilst Jade notched up 5 victories.

Lib Dem MP, Julie Goldsworthy, came second overall for the girls, with Michelle Gayle in third place. Amanda Lamb and Bernie Nolan brought up the rear.

For the guys, MC Plat'num came second with Jason King in third. Peter Duncan followed whilst Adam Ricketts never really got going.

There'll now be a Champion of Champions event

Ant & Dec's Con Test Promises £1 Million

First there was 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire', then 'The Weakest Link' and the current International TV gameshow hit is now 'Deal or No Deal'. But Saturday night stalwarts, Ant and Dec reckon they've got the next big thing - "The Con Test"

The show mixes the bluffing of a great poker player and the audience cravings for general knowledge quizzes, with a major difference - you don't actually have to know the answers in this one. Instead, you have to convince your opponent you have the correct answer. Winners from each show will face each other for a £1 million final prize

Is it me - or does this sound like a glitzier version of 'Call My Bluff'?

British Soap Awards 2006 - Latest Betting Odds

Is it Eastenders or Coronation St that deserves the Best British Soap accolade this year? Paddy Power reckons, without a doubt, that Eastenders is the best - and is currently 2/5 to win the Best British Soap title. Coronation St is 15/8

Bradley Walsh, who plays Danny Baldwin is currently Even money to take home 'best actor' whilst Shayne Richie as Alfie Moon is second favourite at 9/4. For the best actress, you can get Lacey Turner (Stacy Slater) at 7/4 and Jessie Wallace (Kat Moon) at 15/8. Kate Ford, who plays Tracey Baldwin is currently 3/1

The sexiest male is a macho fight between Nigel Harmon - who's Dennis Rickman in Albert Square - at 6/4, vs Chris Fountain (Justin Burton) at 9/4. For the female counterparts, favourite to take the title as sexiest woman in a soap is Kara Tointon (Dawn Swan) at 5/4 followed by Roxanne Pallett (Jo Stiles) at 7/4

Finally, if you think you've got the hold on who's the soap villan of the year, Billy Murray (Johnny Allen) is odds-on favourite at 8/11 whilst Bill Ward is at 3/1 - he plays Charlie Stubbs

Its Gonna Be Celebrity X-Factor vs Big Brother

It could be the reality TV battle of the year.

According to The Daily Snack, ITV bosses are planning to start Celebrity X-Factor on Monday May 29th - the same week as Big Brother 7 begins on Channel 4 which will be 3 days in by then.

An unnamed source reckons its a blatant attempt to sabotage Big Brother's glory - the beginning is crucial for the audience to get a feel for the contestants.

Ultimately, its just a bloody pain - but then again, thats what Sky Plus is all about

Will it be a Funny Man to Record the Official England World Cup Song?

As The Kaiser Chiefs backed out - or just never did plan on recording the official England World Cup song, all bets are on as to who will.

Current favourite is funny man Peter Kay at 3/1 to get the 1000's of England fans singing this Summer. However, some legit bands are also in the reckoning - including indie faves, Kasabian (7/2) and boyband McFly (5/1).

There's also been some support for Brit-faves, Embrace, who've come in from an opening 40/1 into 16/1

Is it Jade and Javine All the Way on The Games? - Updated Betting Odds

Channel 4's The Games is really starting to heat up and according to the bookies it looks as if Jade and Javine have it sewn up - but there's still some value to be had if you look around carefully and a few days left to go.

You can still back Jade at 4/6 at William Hill, but MC Plat'num is available at 10/3 with Paddy Power. If you really want to go for an outsider though, Adam Rickett is available at a huge 40/1 at Paddy - he's only 16/1 at Hills

Onto the women it looks like its Javine all the way - she's almost unbackable at 2/9 at Hills whilst second favourite is Julie Goldsworthy at 3/1 also with Hills. If you still think Michelle Gayle has a chance, then there's some value at Paddy Power at 12/1

La Babe Jolie to have Le Bebe en France

The Sun is reporting that Angelina Jolie is preparing to have her baby in France as a tribute to her dying mother - who was born in France. Brangelina have been seen around Paris frequently in the last few weeks - whilst staving off gossip that they were going to be hitched at Clooney's pad in Lake Como.

In the meantime, Paddy Power has let us all get in on the act by offering odds as to whether it'll be James Jolie-Pitt (7/4 favourite), William or Bradley (both at 8/1) if their offspring turns out to be a boy.

For a girl she could be named Angeline Jolie-Pitt (14-1), Julie or Jane (both at 16/1). Marcheline - Angelina's mother's name - can be had at a tempting 25/1

You can also get Jennifer at 100/1 - but somehow I think that may not happen

Mike Baldwin Takes a 50:50 Flip on his Career

I guess its one way of deciding whether to retire or not. Coronation Street's Johnny Briggs, who plays Mike Baldwin, flipped a coin to decide whether to stay on the soap or not.

It was a case of Heads he goes, Tails he stay - and heads came up - which means Mike is off to the old soap yard in the sky after 30 years playing the housewive's favourite cad - he dies in the arms of arch rival Ken Barlow.

Tomkat Jnr's Name - Will it be Baby Tommy or Baby Katie?

Judging by the size of her, Katie Holmes is expecting any day now, and Paddy Power have opened the book on potential names. Will it be a little Katie or Thomas Jnr? Both are available at 8/1 while Lee is currently on offer at 12/1 and Mary, Tom's mum's name is at 14/1

You can also have a flutter on naming the kid Jerry (33/1), Joey or Dawson at 40/1, Pacey at 66/1 whilst those with an evil sense of humour can get Cruz, Penelope, Nicole or Mimi at 100/1.
Strangely there's no L Ron, Lafayette or Hubbard available. Or even Xenu...

American Idol - Next Elimination - Betting Odds

Simon Cowell is across the Atlantic to judge the latest American Idol (ITV1,2) and is being his usual pleasant self.

This year's crop of idol hopeful include an interesting bunch of country twang, high school upstarts, rock wannabees, boy band backing singers and Taylor Hicks. But as ever, that makes for great entertaiment!

Bet365 have 3 markets available for American Idol - including Top Male/Female, outright winner and next elimination.

The most interesting market is for the next elimination. They have Chicken Little lookalike, Kevin Covais as clear favourite to go next at 13/8. The kid has clearly split the American audience - loved by kids under 5 and grannys over 70 as well that viewer that will always back the underdog. Simon isn't all that impressed either but Covais has found a niche and is playing his role to perfection, including some successful comeback comments aimed at Mr Cowell. He wasn't even in the bottom 3 this week so he clearly has a following somewhere. Whether it can withstand another week is another question (for all those with fingers in their ears, I can only sympathise)

Bucky, the blond-haired country boy is second favourite to leave next at 5/2 - but that small-town appeal is growing I think - the male counterpart to Kellie Pickler, who gave a terrible performance this week and is staying for personality reasons at this point.

Pretty boy Ace Young was surprisingly in the bottom 3 this week - but has been backed consistently by all the judges despite a lack of a distinct (or good) singing voice. That shock position this week has put him at a short 9/2 to leave next week.

Clearly Bet365 think that Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee are 'safe' for a while. I'm not so sure for Katherine - whilst she has one of the strongest voices, a bit like Eliot, she doesn't yet have that star power. But Taylor and Chris are definitely safe for now.

I'll discuss the 'outright winner' odds next time!

Next Elimination: Latest Odds
Kevin Covais 13/8
Bucky Covington 5/2
Lisa Tucker 7/2
Ace Young 9/2
Paris Bennett 10/1
Kellie Pickler 14/1
Elliot Yamin 14/1
Mandisa Hundley 22/1
Katherine McPhee 33/1
Taylor Hicks 66/1
Chris Daughtry 80/1

Bingo is the New Poker

Move over poker, its time for bingo to be the place to be seen

According the gossip blog, HollywoodRag.com, The OC star, Mischa Barton was seen at a West Hollywood Bingo Hall with Splash star, Daryl Hannah recently.

Maybe playing cards were too complicated

Are TomKat Married?

One of the greatest unanswered mysteries of the year? Probably not. And does anyone care about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' strange relationship. Probably not. But current gossip out there is that the twosome got married onboard Scientology's cruise ship, Freewinds (no joke there, honest)

According to the National Enquirer
The National Enquirer can exclusively reveal that they exchanged vows in a brief 30-minute ceremony in the Caribbean last July — just four months after they met.

The wedding was attended by Tom's Scientology pals John Travolta and Kirstie Alley and Katie's "minder" Jessica Rodriguez. Katie, 27, wore a beautiful flowing white dress for the secret nuptials.

Believe it? I doubt it.

But my book on this:

They're married 6/1
They're not married Evens
They'll never get married 1/3
No-one cares 1/10
They're aliens so it doesn't matter 20/1

Biggest Movie Box Office Openings 2006 - Betting Odds

This is for serious movie lovers only!

Bet365 have opened up a book for the year's biggest 3-day openings in the US & Canada. Its full of comic books, sequels ,remakes and TV adaptations and they've put Pirates of the Caribbean 2 as clear 6/5 favourite. It does seem a sure thing with all the cast returning, but the Disney ride has two comic books on its heels with Superman Returns and X-Men 3 both at 2/1

Interestingly, they've put Mission Impossible 3 at 10/1 and is joined by the animation "Cars" at the same price.

I've seen the trailers for all these movies and whilst Cars at least looks the most original, I'm a sucker for Supes - but not sure its got the star power to really break opening records

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 6/5
Superman Returns 2/1
X-Men 3 2/1
Mission Impossible 3 10/1
Cars 10/1
Ice Age 2 25/1
Poseidon 30/1
